Adult Education

Last week I attended the Cavan Monaghan ETB Adult Education Awards in the Hotel Kilmore. The event was really well attended. The recipients of the awards were clearly joyous and you could sense the liberation they were experiencing. Many of them first arrived unable to read or write and had now gained proficiency therein. One man said to me ‘I arrived into my first adult education course in ballyjamesduff with a great load on my shoulders but within an hour I was on a high and the load had lifted.’ The graduates received beautiful certificates, reflecting the FETAC level they had reached. The Certificates were presented by Minster Humprey’s. I was delighted to meet my colleague Cllr. Madeleine Argue there who has a huge commitment to adult education and to education generally in Cavan and Monaghan. Great credit must also go to Dr Fiona Maloney and all the ETB staff.

Health Provisions Bill

I spoke at short noticve on the Health Provisions Bill in the Dail on Wednesday. I was very pleased with reaction to the speech. You view the speech by clicking here.

Sports Ireland

On Thursday I spoke in the Dail on the Sports Bill, emphasising investment to date in County Cavan and the need for more. You can view this speech by clicking here.

His Holiness Mirza MasroorAhmad Khalifatul Masih V

It was a unique and memorable experience to meet Mirza MasroorAhmad Khalifatul Masih V. He leads a Muslim sect who is often the victim of discrimination and isolation. He emphasised that they were opposed to violent activity and that they were ‘jihadists of the heart’.

Canvassing for Cáit Keane in Dublin West.

On Wednesday evening I canvassed in the Dublin West By-Election campaign for Cáit Keane, MEP Brian Hayes, Deputy Helen McEntee, Local Councillors and Party People.

Good Friday Agreement Committee

Attended Committee meeting where needs of the Border Region remain under the spotlight.

EU Affairs Committee Meeting

Attended the Joint European Affairs Committee meeting where Minister for European Affairs, Dara Murphy, was a special guest. I spoke on a number of issues of concern to Ireland. You can view my speech here.

Fundraiser for Drumlin House and Cavan Hospice

Great credit must go to our good friend John and Anne McIntyre for a truly exceptional concert in support of outstanding causes. From memory, I think the amount of money raised was about €14,500. The entire night was heart-warming, well compered by Joe Finnegan of Northern Sound and had a star studded line up. My wife Mary and I were delighted to attend and support it, at the request of our good friend Philomena McCabe, Cootehill.

The Bridge Restaurant Canningstown

It was wonderful to attend the opening of the salubrious, and beautiful Bridge Restaurant in Canningstown. Thanks to John and Carmel and Leo and Rosita for the very kind invite for Mary and I to be there. It was a wonderful, if late, night, the food is mouth-watering and the ambience is very relaxing. Well done to all concerned and may they prosper for many a day.

Roscommon By Election

I was delighted to travel to the Roscommon By Election on Saturday with a number of volunteers from Cavan . We actually had two cars travelling. We were very well received and hosted by Dara Kelly, regional Director of their organisation and by my brother-in-law Pat Tully. Pat coordinated our canvas of a very important, if sensitive area, surrounding Roscommon General Hospital. Anyone who watched Primetime on Monday night will know that Councillor Maura Hopkins is an exceptional candidate. We can only wish her well.
As of now, it is my intention to return for the last time to Roscommon this Saturday. Should you wish to volunteer for the expedition, you could phone me or the Office in Cavan or Dublin. If you decide to travel independent of me or don’t get a chance to be in touch you could just pop into the election headquarters opposite Flemings Supermarket in Roscommon. All hands will be needed on deck this weekend.

You know you are always welcome to be in touch on a personal or community issue.
