The future of our local Post Offices in Cavan and Monaghan must be safeguarded – O’Reilly

Post offices are invaluable to our local communities and their future must be safeguarded.

“Post offices in our local areas provide many important services and they are highly valued by people in every community across Cavan and Monaghan. However, it is clear that we must act to ensure the future of our local post offices are safeguarded.

“As a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Communications, I voiced my support for enabling our post offices to provide a wider range of services, including a greater range of financial services, which would ensure our post offices remain relevant, and can continue to provide the important services which so many people depend upon.

“Not only is it essential that we ensure post offices in local areas in Cavan and Monaghan, and across the country, remain viable, but we must also enable them to be successful.

“While we cannot have unfettered State subvention to ensure they remain open, I would be of the view that a certain level of State support to promote the development of post offices in our towns and villages may be necessary to secure their futures.

“People across Cavan and Monaghan both want, and deserve, a good universal postal service and I, as a public representative, do not want to see any reduction in the postal services available.

“I will continue to voice the need to safeguard our local post offices and the possibility of expanding the services which they can offer. If such proposals would require a level of State subvention than, once it is utilised properly and is sensible, so be it.

“Many members of our local communities value, and depend upon, the services offered through the post office, and these services must be protected to the greatest extent possible.”
