Fine Gael TD for Cavan, Deputy Joe O’Reilly, has today, 23rd May, welcomed the announcement from the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan TD, that Cavan County Museum was one of the successful applicants, in the Local and Regional Museums Scheme administered by his Department.

‘This scheme has been in operation for the past six years offering financial support for small and medium sized museums across Ireland. This year, the Minister decided to expand the criteria for eligibility, making it easier for smaller museums to avail of the scheme’ explained the Deputy.

Twenty-three projects were awarded funding on foot of an assessment process carried out by the Department in conjunction with the Heritage Council of Ireland.

Commenting on the allocation for Cavan, the Deputy said ‘I was delighted to hear that Cavan County Museum was allocated €12,000 in funding for a project entitled ‘The Story of Emigration’. Cavan has a large Diaspora in the States and the United Kingdom and this project will ensure that their narrative is not forgotten.’

‘The Museum in Cavan is an excellent resource for our County; it is a rich repository of local knowledge and is a safe-keeper of our cultures and traditions of old’, concluded Deputy O’Reilly.

Note to Editors– please note that whilst the offers of funding have been made, they have yet to be formally accepted by the applicants in question.
