O’REILLY RAISES ISSUE OF IRISH YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT AT COUNCIL OF EUROPE

Speaking during the ‘Austerity, Youth unemployment and Local Democracy’ Session at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg this morning, Fine Gael TD for Cavan and Monaghan expressed his concern over the high rate of youth unemployment in Ireland.

‘One third of young people in Ireland are unemployed, this level is unacceptable. A general consensus is emerging that there is a real need to marry prudent financial management with a job stimulus policy throughout the European Union. This is a mainstream opinion that is shared by my own Government and is advocated by Mr Mario Draghi, the ECB and is supported by President Hollande and Chancellor Merkel. We need to go on managing our finances in a way that reduces our debt but also stimulates consumer spending and confidence.’
