O’REILLY RAISES ISSUE OF COSTS OF AGRICULTURAL INPUTS

As leader of the Irish Delegation to the Council of Europe, Fine Gael TD for Cavan and Monaghan, Deputy Joe O’Reilly, took part in a special debate on Food Security. He raised the cost of inputs and how this was contributing to inflation in food prices and badly affecting profit levels for farmers.

He cited the speculation on commodities as a real issue on the rising costs of inputs for primary producers.
Deputy O’Reilly called for a ‘carve on speculation and on the buying up of commodities at international level’. The Deputy asked that Governments ‘come together to deal with commodity speculation. It is vital to all areas of Agricultural Production but it is a particular difficulty in the Pig and Poultry sectors’ he concluded.
