O’REILLY CALLS ON MINISTER NOONAN TO LOOK AT DIFFERING PRICES FOR COAL NORTH AND SOUTH OF THE BORDER.

Fine Gael TD for Cavan and Monaghan, Deputy Joe O’Reilly, called on Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan TD to look at the differing prices for coal North and South of the Border. This came on foot of representations that the Deputy received from the Border Regional Authority.

In Northern Ireland, the current price of coal is much cheaper that in the Republic, due to a 5% VAT rate in the North, compared to a 13.5% one here. We now have a situation where Northern Ireland Coal merchants can sell coal South of the Border at a significantly cheaper price that Coal merchants here. As a result, Coal merchants in the Republic are unable to compete with this.

On foot of representations made to me by the Border Regional Authority in Cavan, I decided to bring their concerns to the Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan TD. I made a very strong submission to him on their behalf and impressed upon him the excellent points made by the Authority and I await his response.
