Speaking at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs with An Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore in attendance, Deputy Joe O’Reilly called for action on youth employment at European level and asked the Tánaiste to give the matter priority at the upcoming General Affairs Council meeting in Brussels.

Deputy O’Reilly pointed out that we have had 30% youth unemployment, creating the risk of a lost generation and our ordinary unemployment rate was unsustainable. He stated that financial retrenchment had to be matched by jobs stimulus.

Replying to Deputy O’Reilly, Tánasite Eamon Gilmore agreed that Job Creation must be a priority for the next Council Meeting on for the Irish Presidency in the first half of 2013. He assured Deputy O’Reilly that the Government would be pushing for action on jobs through the use of all mechanisms included in the European Stability Treaty and the European Central Bank.
