New Secondary School on course for Kingscourt, after years of false starts- O’Reilly TD

Speaking after receiving official confirmation from Minister for Education, Jan O’Sullivan TD, that Kingscourt Secondary School will commence construction in 2016, Fine Gael TD for Cavan and Monaghan, Deputy Joe O’Reilly, strongly welcomed the news.

‘Over the years, the lack of a second level school in Kingscourt has placed a serious economic and social strain on the town. This is due to the high level of outflow of money and our young people to other areas in counties Cavan and Monaghan. A new secondary school for the town has been on the cards since 1968 and  despite the drastic increase in population over the past four decades and the building boom of the Celtic Tiger years,  the people of Kingscourt still have no Secondary School.’

‘I know that a great deal of progress was made on the Secondary School Project in the past three years, with the recent purchase of 6 acres of greenfield by Cavan/Monaghan ETB, and this is to be welcomed. I would also like to pay tribute to the former Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn TD, who has made serious advances on this project, since Fine Gael/Labour came into Government in 2011′  explained the Deputy.

The Deputy recently lodged a Parliamentary Question with Minister O’Sullivan, requesting a progress update on the Kingscourt Secondary School project.  Commenting on the Minister’s repsonse, the Deputy said ‘I am happy to have it confirmed by the Minster, that the school project is at the early stages of ‘Architectural Planning’ and is on the Department’s ‘Five Year Building Programme’ to proceed to tender and construction in 2015/2016. When completed, the school will cater for up to four-hundred pupils and this will be a great thing for the people and town of Kingscourt.’

‘In 1968, Cavan VEC bought the requisite lands to provide a school for Kingscourt and after decades of false starts by previous administrations, under this Government, we are finally seeing real progress being made’ concluded the Deputy.
