Decreasing live register figures for Cavan & Monaghan show Action Plan for Jobs continues to work – Senator Joe O’Reilly

Fine Gael Senator for Cavan and Monaghan, Joe O’Reilly has said the fall in live register figures in Cavan over the last year shows that Fine Gael’s Action Plan for Jobs continues to work.

“The latest CSO data shows that the Live Register figures for County Cavan have fallen by 42.5% when numbers for December 2016 care compared with our county’s peak figures in August 2011. Furthermore, in the last year alone, between December 2015 and December 2016, the number of people on the live register in County Cavan decreased by 16.4%. This shows that the Action Plan for Jobs, launched by Fine Gael in Government in February 2012 is working, and assisting in getting people in our local communities back to work.

“Youth unemployment in County Cavan has also significantly decreased, with the number of people under the age of 25 on the live register falling by 64.8% in comparison with August 2011, and decreasing by 23.4% between December 2015 and December 2016.

“In County Monaghan, live register figures were 37.7% lower in December 2016 than at their peak in July 2012, and they decreased by 19.8% between the end of 2015 and 2016. Since July 2012, the number of young people on the live register in Monaghan has fallen by 64%, and by 28.6% from December 2015 to 2016.

“While these figures are encouraging, much work remains to be done, particularly in terms of ensuring that every person in Cavan and Monaghan who is looking for a job has the opportunity to work. It is essential that we continue to support and facilitate further growth and job creation and provide the people of Cavan and Monaghan with the stable and sustainable economy they require and deserve.

“I recently discussed the need for greater inward investment to our constituency and ensuring there are more visits to Cavan and Monaghan by IDA led investors with the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD.

“I will continue to actively engage with Minister Mitchell O’Connor to ensure the needs of every community in Cavan remain to the fore of her Department’s agenda.”
