Fine Gael General Election Candidate for Cavan/Monaghan, Joe O’Reilly, has said that continued Government investment in Sports Clubs is an absolute necessity for County Cavan.
“The Sports Capital Grant is one of the Government programmes that invests in the lifeblood of communities across the County; the local sports club.”
“Unfortunately, the last Government scrapped the Sports Capital Programme and having reinstated it when we came into office in 2011, the Fine Gael led Government demonstrated that despite limited finances, we were determined to invest in local facilities.”
“We understood the importance of the work carried out by sports clubs and organisations in our communities and how the Sports Grant funding helped them do this vital work. It assisted many Cavan clubs to build or improve their facilities and enabled them to buy much needed sports equipment. This in turn increased their capacity to cater to larger numbers of local people.”
“Since 2011, €2.5million was paid out to Cavan Sporting Clubs, under the Programme, with Clubs from GAA, to Soccer, Tennis and Bowling all receiving much needed funding. Such was the popularity of the programme that every year a high volume of Cavan Clubs would submit applications. Unfortunately, not all were successful and some Clubs narrowly missed out, due to technical errors. I would be anxious that any Club which did not get funding in the past few years would get the chance to put an application in again next year. I would also be anxious that those Clubs that fell down on technicalities would get the necessary assistance to ensure that this did not happen again to them.”
“For this money to become available, we need to keep the recovery going. A Fine Gael Government is the only one that can do this.”
