Cavan Voice

Dear Friend,

Welcome to 14th edition of the Cavan Voice.  I hope that you are continuing to enjoy my weekly updates.

Kindest Regards,

Joe O’Reilly TD

I attended the Féile in Bailieborough last Saturday. It was a great event and an organisational triumph. Many families locally were hosting people from as far as Kerry and from Northern Ireland. Well done to all involved.
I attended a Camogie Game on Saturday. It was a delight, with Bailiebrough ultimately claiming victory. It was great to see so many young people and their parents out enjoying themselves. Well done to the organisers.
Council of Europe
I travelled on Sunday to the Plenary Session of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. I accompanied the Irish Delegation, which I have the honour of leading. We took part in all the debates and meetings during the week. I had a bi-lateral meeting with the President of the Council of Europe and former Education Minister and Speaker for Luxembourg, Ms Anne Brasseur, at her request. She wanted to thank me, and through me, our Country, for her very successful visit to Dublin a few weeks previously.
During a fairly lengthy meeting, I again impressed upon her the need for retrospective compensation of our Country for the recapitalisation of our Banks, which was previously agreed to by the EU Council of Ministers. While Ms Brasseur does not have a direct decision making vote, in relation to this matter, she is a very influential figure in Europe and I am happy to say that she is very sympathetic. I also discussed the prospect of President Michael D Higgins visiting the Council of Europe next year.
I also got the chance to speak on the issue of violence in the media, with particular reference to video games and cyber bullying. You can read this speech here.
Function for Councillor Winston Bennett
I attended a get together of the Ballinagh Branch of Fine Gael and other friends for Councillor Winston Bennett on Thursday night. We were celebrating Winston’s great success in the Local Elections. It was a great night and very well attended.
