Cavan Voice 3rd Online Edition

Dear Friend,

Welcome to the third edition of the Electronic Cavan Voice.

I hope you find it informative.
Kindest Regards,

Joe O’Reilly TD

British Irish Parliamentary Association
After my election to the Dáil, I was honoured to be made a full Member of the British Irish Parliamentary Body. We met in Kilmainham on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. One of the Guest Speakers was Frank Ryan, Chairman of the IDA. I put it to him, in public session, that not enough was being done to bring new jobs to County Cavan or similar locations. He promised to try and improve on this, particularly in the light of the new medium term plan being brought forward by the IDA.
When An Taoiseach was with us for a public session, I raised the proposed new €10 levy on lorries crossing into Northern Ireland from the UK and I got an assurance from An Taoiseach that he would work with the UK to mitigate the levy.

European Affairs Committee
I am a member of the All-Party Oireachtas Committee on European Affairs. This week we had Minister Pascal O’Donohoe TD in public session. I raised with him the need for a more regional spread in jobs and also to provide simulated apprenticeship situations due to a radical reduction in Contractors and a potential shortage of tradespeople. The Minister was positive in his reply. This all helps in eventually getting the required outcome.

Cavan Walking Festival
Minister Michael Ring TD launched the Cavan Walking Festival with the ‘Happy Feet’ Walking Group in Cootehill. It was a great day and we should all be out. I walk around the beautiful Castle Lake in Bailieborough a few times a week. I need to step it out more often, as we all do.

O’Rorke Memorial
Irish-American immigrant Patrick Henry “Paddy” O’Rorke, hailed from Killeshandra in Co Cavan. He emigrated to the United States in 1837 fought and became a Colonel in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Tragically, he was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg. A plaque in his name was unveiled at Drumbress, Killeshandra on Thursday by Minister of State, Michael Ring TD.

Ms Nicky McFadden RIP
Last week was marred by the death of my former Senate and current Dáil colleague, Nicky Mc Fadden of County Westmeath. She was one of the nicest and soundest people I met since entering public life. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.

Cavan Drama Festival
I got to another night of the Festival last week. It was a great production of Sebastian Barry’s ‘Steward of Christendom’ by a group from Naas. The acting was truly exceptional. The Cavan Drama Festival Committee do a wonderful job. They deserve great credit.

Drung Variety Show.
I had my annual outing to the Drung Variety Show last Friday night. It is a great extravaganza of song, dance and comedy involving the local Primary School pupils and many adults from the local community. I was so proud to see our own Pauric McMahon in a star role. He can stylishly and competently tread the boards.

Breffni Wheelers
They say cycling is the new golf and indeed is our Taoiseach’s main hobby. Well Breffni Wheelers area an impressive bunch who are doing an All Ireland cycle for the excellent Holy Family School in Cootehill. I was so happy to attend their launch last week in the school. I met the teachers who didn’t miss the opportunity to remind me that they need a new school!

Cavan beat Roscommon!
Cavan’s Senior Team continued their unbroken run of victories in the league by beating Roscommon. I was at the match with my wife, Mary, and our boys. Tribal loyalties won out and Mary unashamedly shouted for Roscommon.

Minister Shatter
I will be speaking tonight on the Confidence Motion when I will point out that the Minister has done no wrong and is by anyone objective analysis the best Minister for Justice out State has ever had.

You know you are always welcome to be in touch on a personal or community issue.
