Cavan Deputy Speaks in International Debate on Syria.

Leader of the Irish Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly to the Council of Europe, Fine Gael TD for Cavan and Monaghan, Deputy Joe O Reilly spoken today, 4th October, in a special debate on Syria.

During his speech he cited the Tánaiste’s outright condemnation at the U.N and reiterated the Irish support that exists for the work of UN Arab League Special Representative, Mr Brahimi. The Deputy then reminded the Assembly that 20,000 civilians have lost their lives, 30,0000 have fled from their homes and 1.5 million are internally displaced. He emphasised that Ireland had contributed €2.25 million of aid to Syria and supported the €40 million aid donated by the European Union.

Deputy O Reilly finished by calling for an Arms Embargo and continuing practical assistance for Syria, ‘ Our immediate aim must to bring an end to violence and to alleviate suffering. My hope for Syria is for an inclusive, tolerant society where all Religious sects, including the long established Christian Communities, can live together in peace and dignity’.
